For some reason I can't sleep past the normal time on a day off. I did have a long leisurely wake up and then I started my day. First on my list for today was to drop off my package of goodies to Arbor House. It's the nursing home in my neighborhood. This is the third time I've dropped off cards to them. They were really happy to see me and added a smile to start my day. They started sharing stories about the cards I dropped off last month. They said you don't understand how much joy these cards give to our residents--yes I do. :) They told me that they had saved a card for a new gentleman and gave him the card as part of his welcome to his new home. They've added mail day to their calendar as a special event now every month. Thirty cards is a challenge, and I don't send more than 2 or three of the same design. The residents are showing off their cards from their new friend. I write little note and tuck inside of the card. That way if they want to give or mail the card to someone else they have that option. They also told me they love the little birthday bags and have been using them to celebrated birthdays. Such a small thing really, but I can only imagine what life would be to spend the rest of my years in a nursing home.
The next stop on my list was at Michael's they had the yarn I use for my winter time warm hugs project scarves on sale for $2 a skein--a real bargain from the normal $4.99 price. I optimistically bought 20 skeins. I have about 10 at home and I counted last night and I have 9 scarves made. Last year I made 36 scarves so I have a few scarves to get finished before December.
A pedicure has my toenails pretty and purple with a tiny design. It's just one of those small luxuries I do to spoil myself. I was craving my favorite puff tacos and had the for lunch. The restaurant only has them at lunch time and only during the week. They were just as delicious as I remembered.
Friday afternoons are my time at the local animal shelter. It's hard to believe, this is my 12th week going there. I stopped at Kroger, my favorite florist, and picked up some flowers and I made a card for the shelter workers. The weekends are a challenge, that's when people tend to surrender their dogs. With the holiday next week it will be a busy week of people dumping their dogs before vacation. I did a lot of laundry today and made it to the bottom of the dirty laundry bin. Egads when you get to the bottom of the bin it is one really really smelly place. I had time with 5 dogs in the courtyard. One of the dogs absolutely loved the pool and we both ended up wet by the time I took him back to his kennel.
It was a day filled with simple pleasures, things that made me happy. Along the way I made a few other people happy. Yep, a really good day today :)
I need to work on happiness via reaching out. Although there are tons of projects I should be doing around my house, they don't sound like much fun and won't always give me a sense of accomplishment and connection.
